Shapes as Instruments: Why a Circle Sounds Different From a Triangle

Short answer: Each shape is one kind of instrument. Circles are textures, squares are harmony, triangles are living creatures, bars are drones and diamonds are percussion. The colour changes from world to world. The job of each shape stays the same.

What each shape plays

Why shapes and not buttons

I wanted to be able to look at the screen and know what I was about to hear. With five shapes you learn it in a minute. A triangle heading for a circle means a creature is about to call over a wash of texture. Two squares closing in means a chord.

It also means the picture is the mix. There is no hidden layer of sound running under the visuals. If a shape is not on screen, its sound is not in the room.

Size and speed matter too

Bars are the biggest and slowest shapes, so drones stay around longest. Diamonds are small and quick, like the accents they play. Circles come in a range of sizes. None of this is decoration. A big slow shape overlaps things for longer, so its sound lasts longer.

How it stays readable

The sound only happens when shapes touch, which is the subject of Sound Only Happens When Things Touch. And where a shape sits, left or right, is where you hear it, which I wrote about in Stereo as Information.

The same five jobs carry over to the other two worlds with different instruments. In Forest the triangle is a singing bowl or a soft chant. In Space it is a short radio call: a rising whistle, a lone ping or a quick chirp. More in Three Worlds, Three Sets of Rules.

Try it: open Ocean and pick one shape to follow. Within a minute you will know its sound. It is free and starts in one click, with no account.
